Walk into any electronics store or browse any retailer and you'll find dozens of laptops at a wide range of price points. The specs sound technical, the marketing is vague, and the sheer number of options is overwhelming. This guide cuts through the noise and helps you identify exactly what you need — and nothing you don't.

Step 1: Define Your Primary Use Case

Before you look at a single spec, answer this: What will you use this laptop for most of the time?

  • Web browsing, email, video streaming: You don't need a powerful machine. Save your money.
  • Office work, documents, spreadsheets: A mid-range processor and 16GB RAM will serve you well.
  • Photo & video editing: Prioritize display quality, RAM (16–32GB), and a fast SSD.
